Park Jae Sung, best known by his stage name PSY, is a 34-year old South Korean k-pop singer, writing and performing the 2012 k-pop dance single sensation, Gangnam Style (강남 스타일). Since it’s mid-July 2012 YouTube release, the hilariously entertaining music video has gained more than 350 million views, making it within reach of the top 10 most viewed YouTube videos of all time.
PSY has appeared on numerous television program, and is popular for his humorous videos and stage performances.
PSY released their first full length album in January 2001 titled PSY… From the Psycho World! (Sung previously explained that “PSY” is short for the English word “psycho”) for which he had to pay a fine due to the album containing “inappropriate content”. Being new to the scene, he stirred up the Korean pop (k-pop) music scene with terse lyrics, strange dance moves and an unusual appearance. Due to his unique style he gained the nickname the ‘Bizarre Singer’.
After seeing minor successes for his next five albums, PSY eventually joined a major entertainment agency in 2010. In 2012, he released his 6th album PSY’s Best 6th Part 1, including the song “Gangnam Style”, meeting with huge international success.
